Keep It Going All Year

Many people are filled with kindness during Christmas, but as the new year begins, that spirit often fades. The love and generosity we show in December should continue long after the decorations come down.

In John 13:34 (NIV) Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” His command is not seasonal. It is the foundation of the Christian life.

Let this season be more than a moment. Let it be a reminder of how we are called to live every day. The message of Christmas is alive all year long when we choose to love as Jesus loves.

Living with the Consequences Repeated covenant-breaking has serious consequences. The flipside is that covenant-keeping has positive outcomes. Notice in this passage the central importance of Torah (law) and Israel's chronic recurrent problem of slipping back into all forms of idolatry. Modern Western society is permeated to its core with idolatry, with one particular ism extending its grasp beyond any other - materialism. Unchecked materialism has so infiltrated Christianity and other religious systems that it goes virtually unnoticed by the majority. Stewards of Unity Paul is asking his readers to live together in the unity of the Spirit, to be a fellowship of believers who love, support, encourage and help one another. Author, speaker and church planter John White (1924-2002) says, 'It is not possible to exaggerate the importance of your fellowship with you fellow Christians. You need their love. You need their discipline. They need yours.' White cites the prayer of Jesus in John 17:20-23, in which Jesus prayed specifically for the unity of his followers. Jesus' reason?
