Introduction to 1 Samuel

As you begin 1 Samuel, Israel is in transition. The time of the judges is coming to a close, and the people are asking for a king. This book introduces a pivotal shift from tribal leadership to a united monarchy, and you'll meet three key figures: Samuel, Saul, and David.

Samuel is the final judge and a prophet who serves as a bridge between eras. His story begins with a miracle—his mother, Hannah, prays for a child and dedicates him to the Lord. Samuel becomes God’s voice to the people during a time when “the word of the Lord was rare.”

When Israel demands a king to be like other nations, God allows it—not because it's best, but because He honors their freedom to choose. Saul becomes Israel’s first king. At first, he looks the part: tall, strong, and impressive. But his heart lacks obedience, and his reign eventually unravels. Still, Saul’s rise and fall teach us about leadership, pride, and the cost of disobedience.

Then comes David—a shepherd boy with a heart after God. Though he's not yet king in this book, you'll see his anointing, his boldness against Goliath, and his complex relationship with Saul. 1 Samuel doesn’t shy away from the tension. David is faithful, but hunted. Chosen, yet waiting.

Throughout 1 Samuel, God’s sovereignty is on display. Human leaders may fail, but God’s purposes never do. And through David, we get a glimpse of the coming Messiah—Jesus, the true King with a pure heart.

Living with the Consequences Repeated covenant-breaking has serious consequences. The flipside is that covenant-keeping has positive outcomes. Notice in this passage the central importance of Torah (law) and Israel's chronic recurrent problem of slipping back into all forms of idolatry. Modern Western society is permeated to its core with idolatry, with one particular ism extending its grasp beyond any other - materialism. Unchecked materialism has so infiltrated Christianity and other religious systems that it goes virtually unnoticed by the majority. Stewards of Unity Paul is asking his readers to live together in the unity of the Spirit, to be a fellowship of believers who love, support, encourage and help one another. Author, speaker and church planter John White (1924-2002) says, 'It is not possible to exaggerate the importance of your fellowship with you fellow Christians. You need their love. You need their discipline. They need yours.' White cites the prayer of Jesus in John 17:20-23, in which Jesus prayed specifically for the unity of his followers. Jesus' reason?
