Tied Together: A One-Year Journey Through the Bible | Day 93 | April 14, 2026

Introduction to 1 Kings 1 Kings picks up where 2 Samuel left off, beginning with the final days of David and the rise of his son Solomon. It marks the height of Israel’s wealth, influence, and spiritual opportunity—and then its slow unraveling due to disobedience. Solomon starts strong. He asks God for wisdom, builds the magnificent temple in Jerusalem, and leads the nation in worship. God blesses him with peace, prosperity, and influence. But Solomon’s heart drifts. He marries hundreds of foreign wives who lead him into idolatry, and his legacy becomes mixed. After Solomon’s death, the kingdom split into two: Israel in the north and Judah in the south. From this point on, 1 Kings follows a long list of kings—most of them unfaithful. You'll see idolatry rise, prophets like Elijah confront evil rulers, and God continually call His people back to Himself. Elijah’s boldness on Mount Carmel is one of the most memorable moments in the book. He proves that the Lord—not Baal—is the one ...

Introduction to 2 Samuel In 2 Samuel, David becomes king—and the kingdom of Israel reaches its peak in unity, strength, and worship. This book is filled with victory and heartbreak, highlighting both the beauty of godly leadership and the consequences of sin. The first half shows David’s success: he establishes Jerusalem as the capital, brings the ark of the covenant into the city, and desires to build a house for God. While God doesn’t let him build the temple, He makes a powerful covenant with David—promising that David’s line will endure forever. This is one of the clearest foreshadowings of Jesus in the Old Testament. Jesus, the Son of David, will reign eternally on the throne God promised. But the second half of the book takes a dark turn. David commits adultery with Bathsheba and tries to cover it up with deception and murder. Though he repents, the fallout is severe: his family faces violence, betrayal, and rebellion. Yet even in the mess, God’s grace remains. 2 Samuel is ...

Introduction to 1 Samuel As you begin 1 Samuel, Israel is in transition. The time of the judges is coming to a close, and the people are asking for a king. This book introduces a pivotal shift from tribal leadership to a united monarchy, and you'll meet three key figures: Samuel, Saul, and David. Samuel is the final judge and a prophet who serves as a bridge between eras. His story begins with a miracle—his mother, Hannah, prays for a child and dedicates him to the Lord. Samuel becomes God’s voice to the people during a time when “the word of the Lord was rare.” When Israel demands a king to be like other nations, God allows it—not because it's best, but because He honors their freedom to choose. Saul becomes Israel’s first king. At first, he looks the part: tall, strong, and impressive. But his heart lacks obedience, and his reign eventually unravels. Still, Saul’s rise and fall teach us about leadership, pride, and the cost of disobedience. Then comes David—a shepherd boy wit...

Introduction to Ruth Coming right after the chaos of Judges, the book of Ruth is like a deep breath of hope. It takes place “in the days when the judges ruled,” which means it happens during a dark and unstable period in Israel’s history. And yet, within these four short chapters, we find a beautiful story of loyalty, redemption, and God’s quiet faithfulness. Ruth is one of only two books in the Bible named after a woman, and what makes it even more remarkable is that Ruth isn’t an Israelite—she’s a Moabite. The Moabites were often hostile toward Israel and worshiped false gods. Yet Ruth becomes one of the most celebrated women in Scripture, reminding us that God’s story includes people from every background, even outsiders. The book begins with tragedy. A woman named Naomi leaves Israel with her husband and sons because of a famine. While in Moab, Naomi’s husband dies, and then both of her sons die as well, leaving her with two Moabite daughters-in-law: Orpah and Ruth. Naomi dec...

Introduction to Judges As you begin reading Judges, the tone shifts dramatically from the victory and unity found in Joshua to a cycle of rebellion, hardship, and deliverance. This book covers roughly 300 to 400 years of Israel’s history and shows what happens when God’s people forget who He is and what He’s done. The book is named after the judges—leaders God raised up to deliver Israel during this dark and chaotic period. These weren’t courtroom judges as we think of today. They were military leaders, deliverers, and protectors. Some were courageous and wise; others were impulsive or deeply flawed. But all were used by God. Judges picks up after the death of Joshua, when the tribes of Israel were settled in the Promised Land but had not yet fully driven out the surrounding nations. God had instructed them to clear the land completely of idol worship and foreign influence, not to be cruel, but to protect their hearts. Instead, they compromised. They tolerated idolatry, intermarr...

Introduction to Joshua The book of Joshua marks a turning point in Israel's story. Moses has died, the wilderness wandering has ended, and a new generation stands ready to enter the land God promised to Abraham more than five hundred years earlier. Joshua, Moses' faithful assistant and one of only two spies who trusted God at Kadesh Barnea, now leads the nation into Canaan. Joshua himself wrote most of this book, with the final portions recording his death added by the high priest Eleazar and later by Eleazar's son Phinehas—both descendants of Aaron. The events take place around 1400 BC, as the Israelites prepare to conquer and settle the region that today includes Israel, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. This book contains some challenging content. The conquest of Canaan involves warfare, and warfare brings death. Readers sometimes struggle with the violence and wonder why God commanded it. Understanding the context helps: the inhabitants of Canaan had become deeply corrupt, ...

Introduction to the Historical Books With the Books of the Law complete, the Old Testament moves into its next major section: the Historical Books. This collection includes Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther—twelve books that continue Israel's story from where Deuteronomy left off. It's worth noting that the Books of the Law also contain history—creation, the patriarchs, the exodus, and the wilderness wanderings are all historical accounts. But those five books are set apart because of their unique purpose: establishing God's covenant with His chosen people. The Historical Books pick up that story and carry it forward through approximately 800 to 1,000 years of Israel's national life. When you finish reading this section, you will have completed the narrative history of Israel as recorded in the Old Testament. That might seem surprising, given that another twenty books remain. But the Bibl...
