Introduction to Job

The book of Job tackles one of life’s hardest questions: Why do the righteous suffer? Set in an ancient time outside of Israel’s national history, Job gives us a window into deep spiritual realities, personal pain, and unshakable faith.

Job is introduced as a man who “feared God and shunned evil.” He is wealthy, respected, and faithful. But in a moment, everything falls apart. His wealth is taken, his children are killed, and his body is afflicted with painful sores. What Job doesn’t know is that his suffering begins with a conversation in heaven—where Satan claims Job only serves God because life is good. God allows Job to be tested, but with limits.

Much of the book is made up of poetic dialogue between Job and his friends. They insist his suffering must be punishment for sin. Job insists on his innocence and cries out to God for answers. His words are raw and honest—full of questions, complaints, and declarations of faith. Through it all, Job never turns away from God, even when he doesn’t understand Him.

Eventually, God responds—not with answers, but with questions that reveal His power, wisdom, and sovereignty. Job realizes that while he may not understand everything, he can trust the One who does.

In the end, Job’s fortunes are restored, but more importantly, his understanding of God is deepened. His story reminds us that suffering is not always punishment, and that faith often means trusting even when there’s no explanation.

Job points us to Jesus, the truly innocent sufferer, who endured pain not for His sin, but for ours. And like Job, Jesus trusted the Father through suffering, showing us how to cling to God when life doesn't make sense.
