  Introduction to Ezekiel Ezekiel is one of the most vivid and symbolic books in the Bible. Written by a prophet who was also a priest, Ezekiel was taken into exile with the first wave of captives to Babylon. From there, he received powerful visions and dramatic messages to share with God’s scattered people. The book begins with a breathtaking vision of God’s glory—reminding readers that even in exile, God is not absent. Then comes a series of bold, sometimes bizarre, symbolic actions. Ezekiel is told to lie on his side, cook over dung, and act out scenes as prophetic signs. Why? Because the people had stopped listening. God used dramatic visuals to wake them up. The first half of the book deals with judgment: Jerusalem’s fall, the people’s sin, and the certainty of consequences. But the second half shifts toward hope.   Introduction to Lamentations Lamentations is a raw, poetic response to devastation. Written after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC—likely by the prophet Jeremiah—it captures the grief, confusion, and deep sorrow of God’s people in exile. The city has been destroyed. The temple lies in ruins. The people are scattered or enslaved. Lamentations gives voice to that heartbreak in five structured poems, each filled with mourning, questions, and moments of hope. Though the book expresses deep pain, it never loses sight of who God is. In the middle of the sorrow, these words rise: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed… His mercies are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22–23). That declaration reminds us that even in judgment, God’s character doesn’t change. He is still merciful, still faithful, still good.   Introduction to Jeremiah As you begin the book of Jeremiah, you are entering one of the most emotional and personal books in the Old Testament. Jeremiah was called by God as a young man and served as a prophet in Judah for more than forty years. His ministry took place during the nation’s final years before Jerusalem fell to Babylon. He pleaded with the people to turn back to God, yet they refused over and over again. Because of the deep sorrow that filled his ministry, Jeremiah is often called “the weeping prophet.” The book includes sermons, visions, conversations with God, and even Jeremiah’s journal-like prayers. It reveals not only God’s message but also the heavy weight Jeremiah carried. He loved his people deeply, and delivering warnings of judgment broke his heart.
