Introduction to 1 Kings

1 Kings picks up where 2 Samuel left off, beginning with the final days of David and the rise of his son Solomon. It marks the height of Israel’s wealth, influence, and spiritual opportunity—and then its slow unraveling due to disobedience.

Solomon starts strong. He asks God for wisdom, builds the magnificent temple in Jerusalem, and leads the nation in worship. God blesses him with peace, prosperity, and influence. But Solomon’s heart drifts. He marries hundreds of foreign wives who lead him into idolatry, and his legacy becomes mixed.

After Solomon’s death, the kingdom split into two: Israel in the north and Judah in the south. From this point on, 1 Kings follows a long list of kings—most of them unfaithful. You'll see idolatry rise, prophets like Elijah confront evil rulers, and God continually call His people back to Himself.

Elijah’s boldness on Mount Carmel is one of the most memorable moments in the book. He proves that the Lord—not Baal—is the one true God. But even this dramatic showdown doesn’t turn the hearts of the people for long.

1 Kings teaches us that leadership matters, idolatry has consequences, and God’s patience is stunning. The kingdom may be divided, but the story of redemption remains on track.

Living with the Consequences Repeated covenant-breaking has serious consequences. The flipside is that covenant-keeping has positive outcomes. Notice in this passage the central importance of Torah (law) and Israel's chronic recurrent problem of slipping back into all forms of idolatry. Modern Western society is permeated to its core with idolatry, with one particular ism extending its grasp beyond any other - materialism. Unchecked materialism has so infiltrated Christianity and other religious systems that it goes virtually unnoticed by the majority. Stewards of Unity Paul is asking his readers to live together in the unity of the Spirit, to be a fellowship of believers who love, support, encourage and help one another. Author, speaker and church planter John White (1924-2002) says, 'It is not possible to exaggerate the importance of your fellowship with you fellow Christians. You need their love. You need their discipline. They need yours.' White cites the prayer of Jesus in John 17:20-23, in which Jesus prayed specifically for the unity of his followers. Jesus' reason? 'That the world may believe' (Jn 17:21). White continues: “For the church was to be left on earth for that purpose; that the world might believe.
