Introduction to Ezra

Ezra picks up where 2 Chronicles ends—with God’s people returning to Jerusalem after decades in Babylonian exile. The Persian king Cyrus gives them permission to rebuild the temple, fulfilling prophecy and showing that even pagan kings are under God’s control.

The book is split into two main sections. The first part tells the story of the initial return under Zerubbabel and the rebuilding of the temple. It wasn’t easy. The people faced opposition, discouragement, and internal compromise. But through God’s provision and the leadership of faithful men, the temple was completed.

The second part introduces Ezra himself, a priest and scribe who arrives later to help restore spiritual order. Ezra doesn’t just focus on rebuilding walls—he rebuilds hearts. He teaches God’s law, calls the people to repentance, and helps reestablish worship centered on God’s Word.

Ezra’s name means “helper,” and he lives up to it. His example shows how deeply Scripture can shape a community when it’s read, understood, and lived out.

Though it’s a book about return and rebuilding, Ezra also shows how easily compromise can creep in. The people struggle with sin, especially in their relationships and cultural practices. But God’s mercy always leads them back.

Ezra points forward to Jesus—the Word made flesh, who not only teaches truth but transforms hearts. As you read, notice how God uses both leaders and everyday people to restore what was broken. That same restoring work continues in us today.
