Introduction to Proverbs

Proverbs is a book of wisdom for everyday life. It’s filled with short, memorable sayings that guide us in how to live well—how to speak, work, parent, plan, spend, and relate to others with godly insight.

Most of the book was written by King Solomon, known for his wisdom, though other contributors include Agur and Lemuel. The first nine chapters read more like a speech from a wise parent to a child, urging the reader to pursue wisdom above all else. The rest of the book contains hundreds of short, practical proverbs.

Biblical wisdom isn’t about being clever—it’s about living in alignment with God’s design. Proverbs shows that wise living leads to peace, while foolishness brings destruction. It offers guidance on topics like honesty, integrity, discipline, generosity, humility, and how we treat others.

You’ll notice that wisdom is often personified as a woman calling out in the streets, inviting people to listen and live. This imagery ultimately points to Jesus, who is described in the New Testament as the wisdom of God. He’s not just a wise teacher—He is the path to life.

Proverbs doesn’t promise a pain-free life, but it does lay out patterns that generally lead to blessing. And it reminds us that the fear of the Lord—a deep reverence and dependence on God—is the foundation for all true wisdom.

As you read, take your time. You might not absorb every proverb in one sitting, but each one offers a seed of truth that can shape your life over time.
