Introduction to Daniel

Daniel is both inspiring and prophetic. The first half reads like a series of unforgettable stories—lions, fire, and miraculous deliverance. The second half is filled with apocalyptic visions that point toward God’s ultimate plan for the world.

Daniel was taken into Babylon as a young man during the exile. Despite being far from home and surrounded by pagan culture, he remained faithful to God. Along with his friends—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—Daniel refused to compromise. Their courage and integrity in the face of pressure are powerful reminders that faith can thrive even in exile.

You’ll read about their refusal to eat the king’s food, their bold stand in the fiery furnace, and Daniel’s quiet faith that led him to the lion’s den. Each story highlights God's presence with His people and His power to rescue.

The second half of the book shifts to visions. These symbolic prophecies reveal God’s sovereignty over kingdoms and empires—past, present, and future. Daniel sees a succession of world powers, the rise of a blasphemous ruler, and the eventual victory of God’s kingdom. These images can feel complex, but the message is clear: God is in control, even when chaos seems to rule.

Daniel points unmistakably to Jesus. He’s described as “one like a Son of Man,” a title Jesus uses for Himself. The book also speaks of a future kingdom that will never be destroyed, established by the Messiah.

As you read, pay attention to both the personal faithfulness of Daniel and the larger vision of God’s rule. Daniel teaches us to stand firm in our identity, to pray with urgency, and to live with confidence in the God who reigns over every nation and every age.

Houses of Prayer; Houses of Light In anticipation of temple construction, David offers a remarkable prayer, a prayer that serves as a template or model for each of us as God's stewards. The prophet Isaiah later refers to that very temple as God's 'house of prayer' (Isa 56:7). And David himself anticipates that reality, declaring in Psalm 18:6, 'In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help.
