Introduction to Haggai

Haggai is a short but urgent call to action. Written after the return from Babylonian exile, it challenges the people of Judah to rebuild the temple—not just physically, but spiritually.

When the exiles first returned to Jerusalem, they started work on the temple but quickly got discouraged and distracted. For nearly 15 years, the foundation sat unfinished while the people focused on building their own homes and rebuilding their own lives.

Through the prophet Haggai, God speaks directly to this misplaced priority. “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” His message is clear: they’ve been putting themselves first while neglecting the worship and presence of God.

But Haggai doesn’t just confront—he encourages. He tells the people that their obedience matters, that their efforts are seen, and that God is with them. In response, the people begin rebuilding the temple with renewed faith.

One of the most powerful promises in Haggai is that the future glory of the temple will be greater than the former. This point goes beyond bricks and gold to something more: the coming of the Messiah. Jesus would one day walk into that very temple, fulfilling the promise of a greater glory.

Haggai reminds us that God’s presence must remain at the center of our lives. When we put Him first, everything else finds its place. And even when the work feels small or slow, God is building something far greater than we can see.

As you read, consider where your priorities lie. Are you building your life around your own comfort—or around God's purposes? Haggai calls us back to the foundation that lasts.

Houses of Prayer; Houses of Light In anticipation of temple construction, David offers a remarkable prayer, a prayer that serves as a template or model for each of us as God's stewards. The prophet Isaiah later refers to that very temple as God's 'house of prayer' (Isa 56:7). And David himself anticipates that reality, declaring in Psalm 18:6, 'In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help.
