Introduction to Mark

Mark is the shortest and fastest-paced of the four Gospels. It moves quickly from one event to the next, using the word “immediately” again and again. This Gospel is all about action—showing who Jesus is through what He does.

Mark likely wrote his Gospel based on the eyewitness accounts of Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples. His audience was primarily Roman Gentiles, so he doesn’t include many Jewish customs or lengthy genealogies. Instead, he focuses on the power, authority, and compassion of Jesus.

The first verse sets the tone: “The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.” Mark isn’t trying to build suspense—he tells you right away who Jesus is, then spends the rest of the book proving it through stories of healing, deliverance, and teaching.

Unlike Matthew and Luke, Mark doesn’t include Jesus’ birth. He jumps straight into His baptism and public ministry. Jesus casts out demons, calms storms, feeds crowds, and walks on water. He’s constantly moving, serving, and surprising people.

But halfway through the book, the tone shifts. Jesus begins to talk about His coming suffering, death, and resurrection. The disciples struggle to understand. They expect a conquering Messiah, not a suffering servant. But Jesus makes it clear: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Mark’s Gospel builds toward the cross. The crucifixion scene is raw and powerful. And in a striking twist, it’s a Roman centurion—not a disciple—who declares, “Surely this man was the Son of God.”

The original ending of Mark is abrupt—possibly by design. It leaves the reader with a sense of urgency: What will you do with this Jesus?

Mark invites you to respond to Jesus not just with belief, but with bold, obedient action. He is the Servant-King—full of compassion, power, and purpose—and He calls you to follow Him wholeheartedly.
